TWO YEARS AFTER HIS DEATH IN A SPANISH JAIL JOHN MCAFEE HAS NOT RECIVED A PROPER BURIAL

When King Charles II returned from exile to rule England after the failure of The Protectorate, he ordered the remains of Oliver Cromwell to be dug up so that the man could be executed again. Naturally this act was performative, as the only possible thing that could be accomplished was to signify the ultimate level of disrespect for Cromwell, for all in the Kingdom to witness. His body remained unburied for centuries, sold and resold as a macabre curiousity, until finally receiving a proper burial in 1960 - nearly 300 years after his death!
One interesting aspect of this story is that it highlights both the significance of burial in human society, as well as the disrespect inherent in denying a person this final milestone of their life. Even after so many years, other people who could not have known or loved Cromwell saw it proper to assure that his bones were laid to rest. The fact is that burying our dead is part of what it means to be human. In modern times, we do not deny this rite to even the most terrible of people.
The John McAfee Foundation holds that the retention by the Spanish government of John McAfee's body has exceeded the limit of human decency. We call for the immediate release of his body to his loved ones so that they may lay him to rest.
